This piece was inspired by a quote from Leilani Farha, UN Special Rapporteur on the right to adequate housing. Over a year ago, she wrote, "Housing has become the front line defence against the coronavirus. Home has rarely been more of a life or death situation." This harsh reality was made even clearer with the imposition of the curfew in Montreal and the deaths it caused. My piece aims to shed light on the harm caused by governmental responses to the pandemic with regard to the unhoused population and the importance of frontline interventions, such as safe, accessible, and appropriate housing for all.
Fern Lou Fernandez paints their love for their community and believes transformation is only possible by building our collective imaginaries.
